Reconstructive Surgery After Massive Weight Loss

Many patients come to Dr. Rajagopal after losing a significant amount of weight, or after gastric bypass bariatric surgery. While they are pleased with their smaller size, many are unhappy with the extra, sagging skin and tissue they are unable to get rid of. The solution to this problem is a major surgical body contouring procedure, sometimes done in multiple stages, to remove excess skin and fat from the the sagging areas, and tighten the surrounding muscles. Reconstructive surgery after massive weight loss can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen, sagging back, buttocks, arms or thighs.

Body Lift

Lower Body Lift, also referred to as a belt lipectomy, “lifts” excess, hanging skin that is left on the lower body after massive weight loss. For patients who also have excess skin around the lateral thighs and buttocks region, a lower body lift can tighten and flatten the buttock, lateral thighs, and abdomen in one surgical procedure.

Body lift procedures are not weight loss procedures, so patients should wait until they have reached their goal weight before pursuing any type of body “lift” surgery, which also includes tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and upper arm lift surgery.

The Best Candidates For Reconstructive Surgeries:

The best candidates for reconstructive/lift surgeries are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by large fat, skin or tissue deposits that won’t respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, can also be improved.
