Botox is one of the most widely prevalent methods used for regaining smooth, younger-looking facial skin while helping to combat the signs of aging and wrinkles.

Common uses for Botox

Muscle contraction causes wrinkles, lines, creases, Crow’s feet around the eyes, etc., which increases as you age. Botox, a protein complex, has the ability to slow down the rate of contractions. Commonly used in the ’11’ lines or frown lines. It can also be used to lift the eyebrow, which can help your eyes to open wider, causing you to look more rested and awake.  As well as used to plump your lips, giving you a much sought after pout. Botox has many uses and is administered in the form of injections and is often used for cosmetic purposes.

What do Botox injections entail?

Botox is injected into specific facial muscles with the aid of a tiny, sophisticated needle. Although this technique doesn’t cause enough pain to require an anesthetic, you tend to experience a stinging sensation due to the needles. However, the target areas are cooled with ice or numbing cream before the injections to reduce discomfort. The effects might be noticeable from the next day itself, but in most cases it takes about 4 to 7 days.

Botox®  FOR SWEATY UNDERARMS AND PALMS (HYPERHIDROSIS)

While it may not be as visible as face sweat, excessive sweating of the palms can be troublesome, mortifying, and in extreme cases, debilitating. It can make business interactions awkward, interfere in romantic moments, and even make it difficult to do simple things like grip your car’s steering wheel, turn a doorknob, or use your smart phone. Botox®  can help treat excessive sweating of the underarms and palms, also known as hyperhidrosis.

Excessive sweating of the palms (also called palmar hyperhidrosis) can be caused by neurologic, metabolic, or other systemic diseases, but often it is an isolated issue for otherwise healthy people. Sometimes triggers, like hot weather or anxiety, cause the sweating, but often there is no obvious cause, which means that it can happen at any time.

If you’re one of the estimated 8 million Americans who suffers from this condition, you know that this excessive, spontaneous sweating is more than a mere annoyance—it’s a problem that can seriously affect your day-to-day life.

Botox® is a safe, long-lasting method to treat excessive sweating of the palms—one which can significantly improve your symptoms. When Botox® is injected into your skin, it blocks the acetylcholine receptors that activate your sweat glands, disabling your ability to sweat in the areas where the Botox® has been injected. This sweaty palms treatment has been in use for many years, and studies that have been conducted on its long-term effects have had very positive results.

Botox® for sweaty palms treatment typically takes less than half an hour, but the effects can last for up to 12 months (although it is possible that you may need two, or in some cases three, treatments per year, depending on the case). The injections can be a little painful in the hands because palms have so many nerve endings—but the needles used are tiny, and nerve blocks can be used to numb the hands first, making the procedure much more comfortable for you.

Most importantly, patients are overwhelmingly satisfied with the results of their sweaty palm treatment; many people report dramatic reductions in their physical symptoms, as well as improvements in their self-confidence and social interactions.

In one study, approximately 30 to 40 percent of patients reported that hyperhidrosis had at least a moderate effect on limiting their work performance prior to their Botox® treatment, whereas afterward only 3 to 10 percent said that that was the case; and approximately 40 to 45 percent of patients felt at least moderately limited by their condition in social situations before treatment, numbers that went down to 5 to 13 percent post-treatment.

If you’re tired of allowing excessive sweating of the palms to affect your quality of life—whether personal, professional, or both—consider scheduling a consultation with Dr. Rajagopal to find out if Botox® treatment is right for you.

There’s no reason to suffer from this completely treatable condition unnecessarily: If you’re interested in taking a step towards curing your palmar hyperhidrosis, give the San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center a call at 415-392-3333.

MICRO BOTOX TREATMENT

Botox Neck Lift Treatment for Neck Lines and Wrinkles

Micro Botox (also known as meso or intradermal botox) is an advanced Botox-based technique developed to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and in some cases even acne. For this procedure, Botox is highly diluted into a solution of skin-hydrating agents and then injected in small doses into the dermis, the inner layer of your skin, in various places on the face and neck.  This innovative technique opens new dimensions of skin rejuvenation.

Micro Botox is new to the United States, with few practices offering the benefits of treatment. As a pioneering Bay Area cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. Usha Rajagopal has adopted this technique into her practice. At the San Francisco Plastic Surgery and Laser Center, we perform Micro Botox treatments at our state-of-the-art location in downtown San Francisco.

How Micro Botox Works

Micro Botox injections cause your sweat glands, as well as your sebaceous glands (which secrete an oil that can contribute to the development of acne), to shrink and atrophy; they also visibly reduce pore size. The result of these changes is skin that is smoother, clearer, and less oily. And since the injections are made superficially instead of into the facial muscles, Micro Botox does not cause the loss of movement the “frozen” effect that regular Botox treatments can. Rather, Micro Botox works just underneath the surface of your skin to fill out the lines and wrinkles being targeted, leading to a translucent glow that makes your skin look healthy and more youthful.

Micro Botox Advantages

  • Reduces pore size

  • Tightens and smooths skin

  • Diminishes acne scar appearance

  • Lessens oil production

  • Reverses acne-causing inflammation

  • Provides natural looking results

  • Superficial injection– leaves facial muscles unaffected

  • Non-permanent treatment

This treatment results in youthful looking skin and a refreshed appearance: without the drawbacks of other Botox treatments. Unlike traditional Botox, Micro Botox is performed at a superficial level. This keeps facial muscles safe from the “freezing” effect common associated with Botox injections.

For some patients, Micro Botox treatment can treat both acne-causing inflammation and acne scarring. Micro Botox effects are not permanent and may be reapplied after a few months.

Our Micro Botox Treatment

Dr. Rajagopal delivers Micro Botox using tiny needles to place the injections strategically in various locations on the face and neck, just below the skin’s surface. Some patients find the procedure uncomfortable, but not extraordinarily so. Some patients experience erythema (redness of the skin) after treatment, which can last for around 72 hours afterward. The course of treatment (number of visits required and their frequency) can vary from patient to patient, depending on factors such as skin quality and level of sun exposure between treatments.

The Best Candidates For Botox® Cosmetic

The best candidates for the procedure are those between ages of 25 and 65. In many cases, wrinkles in people over 65 are not caused by muscle pull but rather sun damage; however, each person is different and must be evaluated.

Botox® for jaw line reduction (Parotid hypertrophy)

Dr. Usha Rajagopal, Plastic Surgeon of the San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, performs non-invasive facial and jaw line contouring and slimming by using BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Angular jaw lines and round faces are very common facial features, especially in Asian ethnicities and particularly in individuals of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese decent. In Asia, jaw bone reduction surgery has been increasing in popularity for slimming down prominent, round faces. However, BOTOX® Cosmetic, which is well known for treating wrinkles and frown lines, can alternatively be used for facial contouring. Instead of undergoing invasive and complicated jaw bone reduction surgery with a plastic surgeon, using BOTOX® injections to contour the face and jaw line requires no downtime afterward and it is safer, faster, and less expensive. The full slimming effect becomes apparent approximately two weeks after the treatment and these results can last anywhere from four to eight months. The cost for using BOTOX® for facial slimming can range from $800-$1200.

The Procedure For Botox® Cosmetic

The procedure works by physiologically weakening the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to expression lines. The contractions of those muscles result in wrinkles. Botox® Cosmetic works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles thereby relaxing them. The result is that the underlying facial muscles relax, resulting in a smooth, unwrinkled look.

No sedative or local anesthetic is used because the pain associated with the procedure is minimal. A small amount of discomfort is felt when the needle is inserted and the liquid injected. This sensation lasts approximately 5 seconds. Because we use a very concentrated form of Botox® Cosmetic, the pain amount is lessened and the chance of diffusion to unwanted muscles is greatly diminished.

Botox® Cosmetic is injected into various locations on the face. The needle is extremely small and only a tiny amount of liquid is injected at one time.

Common Questions

How long should I wait to shower after Botox?

Thank you for your question. There is no restriction of showering or bathing after your botox treatment, you can do that immediately.

I am 31 and looking for something that will prevent fine lines and wrinkles and lay the foundation for future skin treatments.

Crows feet are the common term for the line that run laterally from the outer corners of your eye when you smile and squint. Since they are usually caused by movement Botox can be used to minimize or diminish their appearance.

The nasolabial folds that run from the base of your nose to the corners of you mouth tend to become more prominent with age due to the loss in volume in the mid-face (cheeks). Truth be told you always had these lines ever since you were a child . When we age our cheek muscles atrophy and fat pads tend to shrink and fall, making our skin sage lower. Juvederm Voluma and Vollure give very nice natural volume replacement in these areas.

Microneedling is a very good treatment to improve skin texture and pore size. I recommend the DefenAge skin care system to be use post treatment and in between. This naturally increases basal cell production and will enhance the effects of your procedure. It is also a good long term anti-aging line to use to minimize pore size and wrinkles.

Does Botox cause muscle atrophy over long term use?

The simple answer to your question is yes. Prolonged use of botox can cause some degree of muscle atrophy. It’s good to think about facial muscles as you would any type of muscle in your body. If you don’t use or work out your biceps, they tend to shrink. Facial muscles however are much thinner in comparison to other muscle sin the body so atrophy is rarely apparent.

What is the difference between Micro dermabrasion & Botox?

Microdermabrasion is a kind of facial that can be done both in a doctor’s medical spa office or a regular spa office. Microdermabrasion can be done on all skin tones with pretty much no down time. It removes the stratum corneum layer of your skin and gives your skin a slightly smoother finish. Micro botox is a medical treatment where there are injections involved that are injected underneath the skin surface to help reduce oil production, and to give your skin a more smother finish. It depends on the severity of your problem. Nothing can compare to micro botox, since it will give you the smoothest look. Microdermabrasion will only smooth out the skin surface. They cannot be compared.

I really want to have Botox done. What steps do I need to take?

I would recommend having a consultation first with a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist so that they may assess the areas that you are concerned about. They will let you know if you are a candidate or not, and suggest the right treatment for you. The provider may even be able to do the treatment following your consultation if you decide to do so.

Is It Normal to Have Swelling After Botox?

You should see a plastic surgeon and not a GP because a plastic surgeon is more experienced and knows what they are doing. It may simply be a little bruise under the skin that is causing the lump.
