What do you prefer? Silicone or Saline Breast Implants
Are you thinking of getting a breast augmentation? You’re not alone! Breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery of 2010. There are many factors to consider when thinking of getting a breast augmentation: 4 different types of incisions, 2 types of implants!
In this post, I’ll help you better understand how to choose between silicone or saline implants.
In my practice, I average approximately 50% silicone & 50% saline breast implants. There are two main factors that determine whether a patient would be a candidate for either implant:
What is the initial breast size & desired breast size? I usually encourage silicone implants for smaller breast sizes, especially if my patient want to increase their size by two or more cup sizes. So, for example, a patient starting with an A cup and ending with a C cup would use silicone implants while someone starting with a B cup and ending with C cup would use saline implants.
What is the skin (tissue) quality & body type? If the skin tissue is thin & has stretch marks, I recommend using silicone implants. Also, if the body type is very thin, silicone may be a better option than saline.
Silicone vs Saline: Pros & Cons
Silicone Breast Implants Pros:
More natural look & feel
Less Leakage
Silicone Breast Implant Cons:
More difficult to detect leakage. In fact, the FDA recommends MRIs three years after your original surgery & every two years after that to check for potential leaks
Slightly higher risk of capsular contraction
Tends to be a bit more expensive than saline implants
