Minimizing Your Scars with bioCorneum: How it Works

There are many creams and gels on the market that claim to reduce, and even remove scars—but head and shoulders above the rest is bioCorneum, the first and only scar treatment gel to have been cleared by the FDA so far. Here’s why.

How Does bioCorneum Work?

A silicone gel containing SPF 30 UV protection ingredients, bioCorneum works by binding with a scar’s outer layer of dead skin cells (the stratum corneum—hence the name), thereby protecting the tissue underneath that layer against chemical, microbial, and physical invasion. When it binds with the cells, it forms an invisible, flexible silicone sheet over the area where it is applied, both hydrating the scar and providing it with the protection it needs to mature (stabilize).

Why Does bioCorneum Have SPF 30?

Sun exposure can cause scars to darken—the opposite of what most of us want. The SPF 30 in bioCorneum is there to protect scars from the darkening effects of UV rays and further encourage their maturation process.

Where Can bioCorneum Be Used?

bioCorneum is ideal for use on the face, neck, chest, hands, and any other scarred areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun. Because of the gel’s flexible, breathable nature, it can also be used on joints, irregular surfaces, and large area scars.

How Quickly Does bioCorneum Work?

If you apply bioCorneum as recommended—spread in a thin layer on the affected area twice per day—you should see some results within the first two months of use. For the best results, however, the recommended minimum treatment time for new scars is 60 to 90 days, and the recommended use for older scars is 90 days.

How Much of a Difference Does bioCorneum Make?

bioCorneum has been shown to not only reduce redness and other discoloration in scars, but also to flatten and soften them, improving their cosmetic appearance and relieving the itching and discomfort caused by some scars. There’s a reason the FDA cleared it for use as a scar minimizer!
