Fat Transfer Breast Enhancement Growing in Popularity

Fat transfer has long history been used to correct skin defects in the face, such as deep furrows and wrinkles, but it’s only recently (as I explained in my recent post about the rising popularity of Brazilian butt lifts) that plastic surgeons have begun using the technique to enhance other areas of the body like the buttocks and breasts. It’s something that many women have probably joked about with their friends or privately wished for (“If only I could take this extra fat in my thighs and use it to make my breasts bigger!”)—and now it’s a reality. Patients and doctors are finding that breast shaping and augmentation with fat grafting offers more natural-looking results than implants. And as an added bonus, fat grafting is a 100 percent outpatient procedure that leaves virtually no scarring in its aftermath—something that no other breast augmentation procedure can boast of!

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s 2012 statistics show that the popularity of fat transfer (including breast, buttocks, and other treatments) has increased by almost 90 percent since 1997. Last year, they report, nearly 72,000 fat transfer procedures were performed.

Judging by the growing number of patients I’m getting questions from about the procedure, that number will grow even more this year. In fact, in the past couple of years, I have used the fat transfer technique to augment a number of patients’ breasts—primarily to correct small asymmetries or irregularities in their breasts—and I’ve experienced great success with the procedures.
